Born near Pungkupirri waterhole outside Tjukurla in Western Australia, Fiona Young is the daughter of senior law woman and renowned painter Mrs T. Porter. Fiona and her family are traditional owners for the country surrounding Tjukurla.
Through her mother, Fiona grew up with an intimate knowledge of the sacred sites and the deep cultural and spiritual significance of this country.
In the 1960s, she and her family were picked up by Native Patrol officers and taken to Warburton Mission. She later lived in Kaltukatjara (Docker River) and Warakurna before settling in the newly established community of Tjukurla with her husband, Adrian Young (dec), their children, and extended family.
Today, Fiona spends much of her time with her family and their many dogs, painting regularly and travelling on bush trips. Her daughter, Deborah Young paints alongside her.
She is now a grandmother and a respected senior Ngaanyatjarra woman, known for her strength, cultural authority, and deep love for her country and family.
