Meet Roy
Pastor Roy Yaltjanki is a senior Kaltukatjara artist, pastor and punu carver whose paintings are full of faith, memory, Country and joy.
Now in his nineties, Roy brings a long life of knowledge to his work. He paints places he has known since he was young – Country full of food, family, story, spirit and movement. His paintings are gentle, generous and strong, just like the man himself.
Known to many people as Pastor Roy, he has spent his life caring for community, family and Country. His work brings together Christian faith, Tjukurpa and the deep knowledge he carries as a senior man from the Western Desert.
Country, family and faith
Roy spent his early years in Areyonga and now lives in Kaltukatjara (Docker River), with many generations of his family. He is married to renowned ngangkari Pantjiti McKenzie AO, and together they are part of the strong cultural and family life of the community.
Roy has been a spiritual leader for many years. He is a qualified pastor who has led the Lutheran church in Docker River, while also carrying Tjukurpa, Law and knowledge of Country. His Christian faith and his cultural knowledge are not separate things in his life – they sit together in the way he teaches, leads, carves and paints.
The way Roy paints
Roy has painted and carved punu for decades, but in recent years painting has become an especially strong part of his daily life. In 2023, he began coming into the Kaltukatjara art centre almost every day, often painting from open until close, humming or singing while he worked.
His paintings are a way of recording knowledge. He paints places that matter to him – Country he knew as a child, as a young man, and now as a senior leader. There is a beautiful steadiness in the work: waterholes, sandhills, hunting places, stories and memories all come together on the canvas.
Roy’s paintings often feel joyful. They are full of life, movement and care. He paints Country as something living and generous – a place of food, story, family, spirit and memory. His first solo exhibition Mai Uninpa focused on the visions of Country as he saw it when he was young: beautiful, special, powerful, and full of life”
Recognition
In 2025, Roy was selected as a finalist in the Mosman Art Prize, one of Australia’s longest-running and most respected painting prizes. This recognition places his work within a national contemporary painting conversation, while the heart of the work remains firmly in Kaltukatjara Country, memory and Tjukurpa.
Why his work matters
Roy’s work helps people see Kaltukatjara Country through the eyes of someone who has known it across a long life. His paintings are not only pictures of place; they are records of memory, care, teaching and spiritual strength.
