Denise Brady at Tarnanthi

Denise Brady in front of her work 'Look, I Am Shrinking'', Tarnanthi Festival 2023

We are thrilled to present Denise Brady's work as part of the 2023 Tarnanthi Festival at AGSA (Art Gallery of South Australia).

The exhibition runs from 20 October 2023 to 21 January 2024, and features the latest contemporary indigenous art from across Australia.

Denise draws on traditional iconography and dotting techniques to create her vast canvases, but the stories she depicts are distinctly contemporary. This suite of three large-scale paintings are augmented by a 20-minute audio track from Denise, in which she weaves together themes of colonisation, impacts of government policies, the COVID-19 pandemic, Anangu family life, and her own emotions, observations and experiences. Denise's paintings are more than just visual representations; they are emotional landscapes, rich with the spirit of the country that inspires them.

"I’m an artist who loves painting true stories, to stamp my stories onto a big canvas for the world to recognise. I really like the art centre, I think I was meant to be an artist and to run ministry, to show and tell you things through my paintings, because my paintings are of important things the world should know."

"My dream is to become a strong and wise role model to Anangu tjuta. I really like who I am and what I’m here for, which is to help others, to support and encourage them to be who they are also."

"My dream is to become a strong and wise role model to Anangu tjuta. I really like who I am and what I’m here for, which is to help others, to support and encourage them to be who they are also. This is my story, and I’ve told you how it all started. It’s never going to stop. It’s where my heart is, carrying all these things and putting them on a painting. When I put the story on a canvas, it’s passed on for you to read and understand and think about yourself."

Tarnanthi at AGSA is a platform to showcase contemporary indigenous artist to the wider community.

The exhibition is open to all, with free entry.
