Carol Giles’ Ngayaku Ngurra Wilurrara takes viewers into her personal country, northwest of Tjukurla. Through expressive lines and earthy colors, Giles captures the connection between women, the land, and the act of gathering yawurr-yawurr (little black berries). The soft brushstrokes and fluid forms echo the movement of women walking through the bush, collecting these foods, and participating in the rhythms of the land. This painting is both an autobiographical reflection on Giles’ childhood and a broader celebration of the ongoing traditions of bush food collection in the Western Desert.
