Wingarntjirri

40.6cm x 101.5cm

Acrylic on canvas

Sally Butler’s Wingarntjirri is a deeply personal depiction of her birthplace, west of Tjukurla.

The painting’s warm, earthy tones and flowing forms represent the sand dunes (tali) and rockholes (kapi) of the region. Sally’s use of vibrant yellows, reds, and ochres highlights the deep connection she feels to this land, where her mother walked with her before she was born.

The soft-edged forms and gentle brushstrokes evoke both the physical beauty of the desert and the intimate, familial ties she has with this sacred place. The work speaks to the artist’s strong sense of identity and belonging to her country.
