About the artist

Nerida Giles

Nerida Giles is an established Western Desert artist and respected cultural leader. She serves as Chairperson of Tjarlirli & Kaltukatjara Art Indigenous Corporation, where she supports community-led artistic practice and the creative growth of artists across the Ngaanyatjarra lands.

Nerida’s commitment to ethical practice and artist advocacy is also recognised through her role on the board of the Aboriginal Art Centre Hub of Western Australia (AACHWA), the peak body for Aboriginal art centres in WA.

Born near Cosmo Newberry in Western Australia, Nerida is one of six children in a family deeply rooted in artistic and cultural traditions. Her mother, Mrs E. Giles, was a celebrated Western Desert painter and traditional knowledge woman, whose work and cultural wisdom continue to inspire Nerida’s own practice.

Nerida spent her early childhood years in Western Australia before moving with her family to Docker River. These formative years living and working across Country have shaped her strong connection to land, culture and community – connections that are reflected in her artwork. Today, she divides her time between Tjukurla, Warakuna and Docker River, maintaining deep ties to each place and the knowledge they hold.

Nerida’s work is grounded in the stories, landscapes and cultural knowledge of her homelands, and she continues the legacy of the women who came before her while helping ensure a strong future for emerging artists.
