by Lyall Giles
$720
55.9cm x 91.4cm
This work depicts a site called Warmarrungu near Karku, which was the birthplace of Lyle's mother, accomplished painter Nyarapayi Giles. Lyle is painting Warmurrungu, an important site where ochres are collected for ceremonial use, still to this day. In the dreaming times many emus travelling across country from NT into WA, these emus went down into the rock holes and some took the form of trees that can still be seen there today. The ochre is excavated in a special way using a stick. Ceremony is performed and the emu spirits are released to again take physical form.
